When I was appointed as Azerbaijan's ambassador to Qatar, the unjust blockade had just begun. I personally witnessed the immediate actions taken by Qatar which transformed the uncertainty to stability and eliminated the consequences of the crisis.
In this regard I would like to note that the measures taken so far under the leadership of the His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani have been effective and praiseworthy. Today, we observe that Qatar has achieved significant results.
Qatar has been implementing projects to ensure its self sufficiency in various sectors such as food and medicine by diversifying investment with regional and international cooperation. Despite the increase in locally produced food, new trade routes and opening the Hamad Port and Free Economic Zones have played vital role in implementing a comprehensive economic policy.
The new laws and regulations, which are giving the right of 100% foreign ownership, trading in any currency, 100% repatriation of profits and etc., adopted by Qatar significantly increased the number of international companies operating in the country.
I would like to note that crises and political conflicts between countries not only slow down the development of the countries involved, but also have a negative impact on the economic development of the entire region. For this reason, the international community and organisations should play a result oriented role in resolving these conflicts.
Political and economic relations between Azerbaijan and Qatar have been maintained in the context of friendship and mutual understanding in the post-crisis years, as in previous years. Significant work has been done to establish and further develop the bilateral economic relations, including investments and trade.
The second meeting of the Joint Economic Commission, the first meeting of the Working Group on Investments and the first round of Political Consultations were held last two years in Baku and Doha. There is mutual interest for co-operation between public and private companies in both countries. If we look back recent years, there has been a significant increase in trade turnover.
Meanwhile I should underline that current statistics do not reflect the potential of our countries, so our main goal is to establish wider relations between companies thus achieving sustainable grow in trade and ensuring the flow of capital.
