The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) Friday announced 1,311 confirmed new cases of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19), and 84 recoveries in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of recoveries in Qatar to 2,370 cases. Till date, 20201 positive cases were reported and the total active cases now are 17819. The death toll stands at 12.
The MoPH explained on its website that most of the new cases are due to expatriate workers who have been infected with the virus as a result of contact with individuals who have been previously infected, in addition to recording new cases from within groups of workers from various regions. These cases have been identified as a result of investigations carried out by the ministry.
The rest of the new cases of Covid-19 have come from citizens and residents who have contracted the virus from members of their families, who in turn had contracted the virus through their workplaces or other places where they had been to exposed to infected people. All the new infected cases have been quarantined where they are receiving the necessary medical care.
The MoPH noted that the current period will see a fluctuation in the number of cases of infection due to several reasons, including that the outbreak of the virus is in the peak stage, before the number of infections begin to descend gradually.
The reason for the high numbers is that the Ministry recently stepped up efforts to track the transitional chains of the virus and expand the search for people infected by conducting extensive and proactive investigations of large numbers of contacts with people who have recently been confirmed with the disease.
The number of daily tests performed depends on the number of contacts individuals confirmed to be infected with the virus have had, as well as the random tests that are taking place in different parts of the country.
The MoPH has launched community swabbing to learn more about how the Covid-19 infection is transmitted within the community and to identify people who have the virus but show no symptoms.
Last week, 2,500 people were tested through community swabbing and the programme will continue over the coming period. The ministry urged anyone who has been asked to participate in community swabbing to take part in this initiative in order to contribute to the national effort to combat the virus and to understand more about how it is transmitted in the community.
According to the MoPH, with a total of 3,963 people tested for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, as many as 120,458 have been tested so far in Qatar.
There are 20,201 positive cases to date in Qatar and 17,819 currently undergoing treatment. The total number of Covid-19 deaths so far in Qatar is 12.
The MoPH called on all members of society to stay at home and not go out except in cases of necessity and to implement preventive measures and maintain physical distancing, including in the workplace and public places.
