Dr Deepak Mittal will be India's next ambassador to Qatar, the Indian embassy in Doha has said.

"He will be taking over in his new assignment in a few weeks," the embassy tweeted.

Dr Mittal is currently joint secretary at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India. He is from the 1998 batch of the Indian Foreign Service.

The decision to appoint Dr Mittal as the new envoy to Qatar was announced by the MEA on Wednesday.

In a post on social media, outgoing Indian ambassador P Kumaran said: "Am happy that the Ministry of External Affairs has announced that my dear friend and colleague, Dr Deepak Mittal, will be succeeding me as the next ambassador of India to the State of Qatar. I look forward to handing the baton over to him in a few weeks. I am sure he will take the bilateral relationship and the profile of the Indian community in Qatar to greater heights in the coming years."

Kumaran was appointed the Indian ambassador in 2016, replacing Sanjeev Arora.
