Indonesia expects the number of new coronavirus cases to decline by June if restrictions currently in place are followed, the head of the country's Covid-19 taskforce said on Monday.

"The president calls on the public to be disciplined and authorities to be more firm (in enforcing restrictions) so that by June we will see a decrease in cases and by July we can live normal lives," Doni Mornardo told a new conference.

Indonesia has imposed large-scale social restrictions in parts of the country, banning large gatherings and closing non-essential businesses and public places.

Air and sea travel in the world's fourth most populous country was suspended until May 31, after the government announced a ban on home-bound annual travel ahead of the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Indonesia rose to 9,096 on Monday after 214 new infections were recorded in the past 24 hours, taskforce spokesman Achmad Yurianto said.

Twenty-two deaths brought the number of fatalities to 765, he said. There were 23 recorded deaths on Sunday, and 31 deaths on Saturday.

The country has tested nearly 60,000 people so far.
