Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar has launched a live webinar series to allow the healthcare community in Qatar to discuss the challenges posed by the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, its impact, recommended responses and treatment protocols.
Each Wednesday at 4pm, a different medical expert will give a live presentation to explain their understanding of the pandemic, how it can best be controlled, and how it will affect the way healthcare is delivered in the future.
The Covid-19 Live Webinar Clinical Series was developed by WCM-Q’s Division of Continuing Professional Development. In addition to providing a means for discussing the implications of the pandemic, the webinar series also addresses an urgent need to support the ongoing learning of the local healthcare community while physical distancing measures are being observed.
The live webinars are accredited locally by the Qatar Council for Healthcare Practitioners-Accreditation Department (QCHP-AD) and internationally by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).
Dr Thurayya Arayssi, senior associate dean for medical education and continuing professional development, said, “We decided to establish this series because it is very important that the local healthcare community be able to discuss the impact of Covid-19 on clinical practice in Qatar so that they can share knowledge and work out the best way each of them can help to manage the crisis. It is also a socially useful way for us to continue to fulfill our obligations to provide ongoing professional development learning opportunities for local healthcare practitioners.”
The first speaker in the series was Dr Adeel Ajwad Butt, vice-chair of the Department of Medicine and director of the Clinical Epidemiology Research Unit at Hamad Medical Corporation, who gave a presentation titled Containment and Management of the SARS-CoV-2/Covid-19 Pandemic. Dr Butt is also professor, Medicine and Healthcare Policy and Research at WCM-Q, a Qatar Foundation partner university.
Other speakers in the series include Dr Javaid Sheikh, dean of WCM-Q, who will speak about the sociocultural aspects of the Covid-19 pandemic; Dr Sharon Kaur, senior lecturer in the Faculty of Law at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on the role of ethics in the Covid-19 pandemic; and Dr Mahrukh Rizvi, an alumna of WCM-Q’s Class of 2011, now a specialist in Internal Medicine, Nephrology and Critical Care in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr Rizvi will give a presentation titled Covid-19 pneumonia investigational therapeutics – navigating the uncharted.
The Division of Continuing Professional Development has developed two further online webinar series: Biostatistics for Healthcare Practitioners Live Webinar Series, a four-part series beginning on April 28, 2020 and running from 3pm - 4.15pm; and the WCM-Q Grand Rounds Live Webinar Series, starting on May 10, 2020, running weekly from 2pm - 3pm.
