The Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC) Humanitarian Funds (Insania), together with Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS), is supporting Qatar in combating the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak, by funding the provision of food aid by QRCS for poor families and workers.
Building upon the partnership with QRCS, this is in response to the appeal by the Supreme Committee for Crisis Management to mobilise support for the government’s Covid-19 control efforts. Chairman of the OICHF Board of Trustees, Sheikh Dr Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, said the initiative was a contribution to the efforts made by Qatar, which had many humanitarian initiatives around the world. He added that OICHF had a responsibility for providing financial and non-financial support amid this global crisis.
OICHF and QRCS, he explained, would distribute food baskets and vouchers to a large number of poor families and expatriate workers, as many of them had stopped their work and were subject to home quarantine. Sheikh Dr Abdulaziz al-Thani valued the great efforts made by Qatar to curb the spread of the virus and ensure the safety of every national or resident in the country.
He reiterated his thanks and appreciation to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani (the founding sponsor of OICHF), and Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their infinite support for the humanitarian programmes conducted in the countries covered by OICHF.
“Only with the support from His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani that OICHF could have its headquarters here in Qatar to do its work,” said Sheikh Dr Abdulaziz al-Thani.
He described Qatar, under its wise leadership, as a leading country in the regional and global humanitarian arenas. “Here, it enjoys an outstanding status, thanks to its active humanitarian and charitable organisations, mainly QRCS,” Sheikh Dr Abdulaziz al-Thani emphasised. “This encouraged us at OICHF to take this positive step to join hands to help the vulnerable.”
OICHF and QRCS have a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to pursue their joint long-term humanitarian goals.
Under their bilateral strategic co-operation, they seek to enhance their regional and international presence, build their respective capacity in the common areas, better mobilise and diversify resources, work together on specific programmes and projects towards their joint goals, create more opportunities to have stronger influence on development and humanitarian issues related to their areas of regional and international work, and develop and apply the best practices in areas of common interest.
