The gradual opening of the closed part of Industrial Area will begin Wednesday, starting from Streets 1 and 2 and Al Wakalat Street, HE the Spokesperson of the Supreme Committee for Crisis Management Lolwah bint Rashid bin Mohamed AlKhater has said.
Work will continue to open the remaining part of the area based on the medical situation in the interests of the people, she told a press conference Monday evening.
Around 6,500 workers were shifted in preparation for partially opening the closed part. They were shifted to precautionary quarantine facilities to screen for early detection despite no symptoms of the infection, in order to ensure their safety and that of others in the area.
Meanwhile, HE the Spokesperson said 90% of coronavirus infections in Qatar are mild cases and only 1% are serious.
HE AlKhater also noted that Qatar has the lowest death rate in the Arab world and one of the lowest in the world compared to the number of people infected.
The first spike in Covid-19 cases occurred in March and was linked to the return of Qataris from abroad. Then, there was relative stability followed by another rise related to the discovery of a group of cases from the Industrial Area and this led to closure of the area, she observed.
Family visits were among the most important reasons for the spread of Covid-19 among Qataris, in particular, the press conference was told.
She urged everyone to stay safe and stay at home.
"It is necessary to continue applying preventive measures, the most important of which is not leaving the house except for necessities, wearing masks, washing and sanitising hands and practising adequate social distancing, especially as we are entering the blessed month of Ramadan," she said.
HE AlKhater stressed that "this pandemic may remind us that God's ability is above all ability and that we must from now on pay attention to what adds to our selves, our societies and our countries". She said people should "seize the coincidence" of having the month of Ramadan at the same time as this pandemic "to rearrange our priorities and focus on what is beneficial and constructive".
"We call upon all and urge to avoid family gatherings during Ramadan," HE the Spokesperson said.
