The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) participates in the events to mark the World Health Day, which falls on April 7 every year.
This year's slogan to mark the occasion is 'Support Nurses and Midwives', and this in conjunction with the observance of the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife.
The vital role that nurses and midwives play in maintaining health is highlighted, as well as their significant role in universal health coverage, maternal and newborn health, including mental health, emergency preparedness and response, patient safety and integrated care.
HE Minister of Public Health Dr Hanan Mohamed al-Kuwari said that Qatar attaches great importance to nurses and midwives, believing in their pivotal role in improving healthcare.
In her statement on this occasion, the minister added that the nursing cadres play a vital role with their counterparts in the medical staff who are in the frontline of the fight against the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) at the international level.
The minister expressed gratitude to all health personnel working on fighting this pandemic.
There are a total of 23,660 nurses and midwives working in Qatar in the governmental, semi-governmental and private health sectors.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), nurses and midwives represent more than 50% of the health workforce in the world, and constitute more than 50% of the current deficit in the number of health workers worldwide.
WHO estimates that the world needs 9mn additional nurses and midwives in order to achieve universal health coverage by 2030.
WHO seeks to improve the contributions of nurses and midwives to raise the level of health and well-being for all.
