Authorities in Burkina Faso announced on Wednesday the registration of the first death from coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country, which is also the first death in sub-Saharan Africa.

‘We recorded the death overnight of a female patient aged 62, who suffered from diabetes and was in intensive care,’ Burkina's national coordinator for responding to the virus, Professor Martial Ouedraogo said.

He added that 7 new cases of the virus had also been recorded, bringing the number of infected people to 27, 15 women and 12 men.

On Saturday, Burkina Faso closed all schools and suspended demonstrations and public and private gatherings until the end of April in an attempt to stop the spread of the disease.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health of Zambia announced on Wednesday the registration of the first two cases of COVID-19.

‘The patients are a Zambian couple that travelled to France on a 10-day holiday,’ Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya said. (QNA)
