Qatar University (QU) is making arrangements to continue regular classes through a virtual learning system from March 15, as classes in all educational institutions across Qatar have been suspended by the government to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19).

QU administration has delivered many workshops by the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning on the techniques for distance education and directed all professors to start using them from March 15, according to a statement.

Dr Omar al-Ansari, vice president of Academic Affairs, has issued relevant instructions for the success of the virtual learning system. Students will be provided in advance with links to the lectures, which will be recorded and uploaded.

The course professor is responsible for following up students' attendance as well as for their academic performance. The faculty is also advised to use the electronic platforms in order to communicate to their colleagues.

Commenting on the new virtual educational system, Dr Khaled Kamal Naji, dean of College of Engineering, said, "We are focusing on the new system which can help students interact with professors through this portal.”

Prof Ibrahim Alkaabi, dean of General Studies, said that The College has started applying virtual education in foundation programmes and general requirements according to the course.

As for the College of Arts and Sciences, the science department has already begun to communicate with students through the virtual educational system, while other departments will start the functioning from March 15.

Dr Adam Fadlallah, dean of College of Business and Economics, observed that the new system has given the ability to continue working on a regular basis.

Commenting on the launch of virtual education, Dr Mohamed Diab, dean of College of Pharmacy, said the initiative is part of QU’s comprehensive plan.

Dr Ibrahim al-Ansari, dean of the College of Sharia, also held a meeting on the same day announcement was made by the government and issued several preparatory measures to all the staff and students.

Commenting on QU’s development towards virtual education, Dr Mona al-Marzouqi, assistant dean for Research and Graduate Studies, confirmed that professors of the Faculty of Law have begun giving their lectures remotely to students.

The virtual learning system also allows students to ask questions through voice recording and writing, the statement added.
