The UN Security Council hailed Qatar’s mediation, role and auspices of the negotiations between the United States and the Afghan Taliban.
During a session held on Tuesday on the Situation in Afghanistan, and after voting on a resolution adopted unanimously by the UN Security Council in which the recent agreement between the United States and the Afghan Taliban was approved, the Acting Deputy Permanent Representative of the US Mission to the United Nations ambassador Cherith Chalet expressed in a statement her country’s gratitude to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, and to the decisive support and role played by Qatar in hosting US-Afghan Taliban talks, that culminated in the signing of the Agreement for Bringing Peace to Afghanistan between the two parties in Doha on February 29.
“We are especially grateful to His Highness Sheikh Tamim for Qatar’s support, and the critical role it played in hosting the talks that led to this momentous occasion,” he said.
The support and engagement of the international community will continue to be critical in the next steps of the peace process, she said, adding “we are eagerly looking forward to the next steps of the peace process.”
The Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations, ambassador Christoph Heusgen, hailed, in his country’s statement before the Security Council session, Qatar, as well as its people and government, for what it had done for years to ensure that the agreement will be signed, expressing appreciation for the close co-operation between his country and the government of Qatar in organising the intra-Afghan dialogue which he described as important to the future of Afghanistan.
Indonesia, Saint Vincent, the Grenadines, South Africa and Vietnam also praised the essential role Qatar played in sponsoring the negotiations that resulted in the signing of the historic agreement between the United States and Taliban to end the 19-year war.
During the session, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution in support of the agreement signed in Doha between the United States and Afghan Taliban, welcoming the recent steps to end the conflict in Afghanistan.
