Prime Minister Imran Khan has launched the Rs24bn Ehsaas undergraduate scholarship programme in Islamabad.
Sharing key features of the programme, the prime minister said that it is the country’s biggest need-based scholarship programme for undergraduates.
Khan said 50,000 scholarships will be given each year to the deserving students of 119 public sector universities across the country, including in Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
A total of 200,000 students will benefit from this programme.
Khan said that a 50% quota has been fixed in the undergraduate scholarship programme for the women, and 2% for the disabled persons.
He said the scholarship programme covers the tuition fee and Rs4,000 top be given to the students as a monthly stipend.
Special Adviser to the Prime Minister Sania Nishtar said that more than 132,000 students have applied for the scholarship.
She said the whole process has been completed transparently with the co-operation of Higher Education Commission, adding that the commission’s online portal for the receipt of scholarship applications for the next year will be opened this June.
Nishtar said that various programmes have been launched under Ehsaas programme to steer the people out of poverty.
