In yet another international recognition for its efforts to develop Qatar, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has won one more award.
Ashghal’s Doha South Sewage Infrastructure Project has been awarded the Oracle’s “Construction and Engineering Excellence Award” for “Enterprise-wide Standardisation in Public Infrastructure”.
According to a statement by Ashghal, the project was recognised for the use of digital engineering as a primary strategy for process efficiency, resource utilisation, record management, enhanced collaboration and implementation of construction best practices.
The award was received by engineer Khalid Maher al-Qatami, head of Treatment Plants and TSE Network Projects Section at Ashghal, during Oracle’s annual awards ceremony held on February 26 in Doha.
The ceremony was also attended by representatives from Jacobs (previously CH2M), the project management consultant for Doha South Sewage Infrastructure Project.
Oracle is an international organisation that’s specialised in providing technological solutions to clients from different countries including the US, Europe and Asia.
Project Progress
In April 2019, Ashghal completed the construction works of the Main Trunk Sewer (MTS) as part of the Doha South Sewage Infrastructure Project. The MTS is 16-km long and is divided into three segments, Eastern, Northern and Western. In addition to this, the construction of seven lateral sewer tunnels of approximately 24km was completed using 170 shafts at different locations within Doha South.
The flows from these lateral sewers will be conveyed to the three segments of the MTS, which will then convey these flows to the existing Doha South Sewage Treatment Plant through a 40m long deep foul sewerage pumping station.
An important feature of the project is that the gravity MTS will reduce the environmental impacts by fully controlling the odours at the sewage treatment works and conveying system and reduce other environmental problems arising from sewage overflow due to excess hydraulic pressure on the existing drainage network where sewage flows exceed its absorptive capacity.
The project is designed to accommodate the population growth expected in Doha South and has the capacity to be linked to future infrastructure projects. Once completed, the project will enable the decommissioning of more than 20 foul sewer pumping stations located in the residential and commercial areas in Doha South.
Several International Awards
It’s worth mentioning that the Doha South Sewage Infrastructure Project has won several prestigious international awards in 2019. The project won the Engineering News Record (ENR)’s Global Best Project Award in the Wastewater Category. The award came in recognition to its design innovation, outstanding health and safety performance, effective risk management and implementation of best construction practices.
The project also achieved the Civil Engineering Environmental Quality Assessment and Award Scheme (CEEQUAL)’s “Design and Building Award” with ‘Good Rating’ as well as the “Exceptional Achievement Award” in the Water Environment and Resources Category making it the first and only project to obtain these awards in the Middle East at the time.
In 2019, for the second year in a row, the project also won the Gold Award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) for its outstanding occupational health and safety performance in addition to adopting the best risk management practices in all aspects of the project implementation.
