The AFG College with the University of Aberdeen held the official launch of its new Master of Laws (LLM) programme in International Commercial Law recently.
The event was held at the Sharq Village Spa & Resort in Doha, with a number of dignitaries, academic staff and applicants in attendance.
The launch was jointly hosted by AFG College principal, Brian Buckley and the University of Aberdeen’s Head of Law, Prof Greg Gordon. The event was also attended by Sheikha Mariam bint Nawaf al-Thani, who represented AFG College Chairperson & Founder Sheikha Dr Aisha bint Faleh al-Thani.
Faisal bin Rashid al-Sahouti, Qatar International Court CEO, discussed the role of the International Court and the importance Qatar attaches to the rule of law. Al-Sahouti said, “I am extremely happy to have been invited to the launch of the new LLM. This programme will further enhance the knowledge of the student body here in Qatar and I am supportive of any initiatives that help develop future leaders and scholars.”
The programme aims to equip students with a detailed understanding of the legal functions to operate within the rapidly changing domestic and international business environment. Students will gain an insight into specific areas of business law, which include the regulation of financial and commercial activities within an organisation, as well as international perspectives in company law.
The University’s Law School has an unbroken lineage dating back to 1495; the date of the formation of the University. Throughout its history, the Law School has sought to empower their students by equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to operate proficiently within the complex business arena.
On successful completion of this specialist Master of Laws, students will have engaged with peers from a diverse range of fields including law, business and finance, and will have developed a deep understanding of this specialist area, having the ability to offer their respective organisations advice and support in the company’s international commercial activities.
Prof Gordon said, “In an increasingly interconnected world, it is more important than ever to have a sound knowledge of legal rules governing the international sale of goods, international dispute resolution processes and the law and practice surrounding the governance of multinational companies. The University of Aberdeen is proud to partner with our colleagues at AFG to make this programme available to students in Qatar”.
