HE the Chairman of Qatar's Gaza Reconstruction Committee, ambassador Mohamed al-Emadi, met the leadership of the Hamas movement in Gaza headed by Yahya al-Sinwar. The two sides discussed the current conditions in Gaza, the latest developments and ways to ensure peace. They also discussed available mechanisms to improve the living conditions of the residents of the Gaza Strip.
Ambassador al-Emadi pointed out that the difficult humanitarian conditions in Gaza require from all to stand up to their moral and humanitarian responsibilities to improve the living conditions of the residents of the Strip, which has been under siege for years.
During the meeting, he said, it was agreed that the Qatari committee will increase the number of families benefiting from cash assistance for February 2020, to 120,000 by giving $100 to each family.
He also added that the committee will allocate $1mn to support a marriage project for 500 young people who are unable to bear the costs of marriage, in addition to allocating another $1mn to restore a number of homes for poor people in the Gaza Strip governorates, and another $1mn to support university graduates from Gaza who hold pending certificates as a result of the failure to pay due fees.
Ambassador al-Emadi stressed that the announced projects package will be implemented in co-ordination with the relevant ministries in Gaza, noting that this aid aims to improve the humanitarian conditions and achieve a decent life for the residents of the Strip, appealing to all relief institutions and international community organisations to increase the humanitarian assistance provided to the residents of the Strip as conditions portend a real catastrophe.
He said that an announcement will be made soon regarding the start of the implementation of a project to establish the central hospital in Rafah Governorate, southern Gaza Strip, after the completion of the procedures related to the project, at a cost of about $24mn, stressing that Qatar is making efforts with all parties to solve the electricity problem in Gaza, and that there are positive signs for reaching radical solutions to this complex problem.
Ambassador al-Emadi praised his meeting with the leadership of Hamas, describing it as a "positive meeting", while stressing Qatar's permanent support for the Palestinian people and their just cause in all international forums, especially during this critical and difficult period the Palestinian cause is going through, expressing his optimism that the coming stage will see an improve in the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip as a result of the efforts being made with the various parties.
