* Um Salal public slaughterhouse being developed to increase capacity to 700 heads per day

The slaughterhouse capacity in the country is set to increase as new, developed facilities are due to open soon, Hassad, Qatar’s premier investor in the food sector, Saturday announced.
These will operate alongside the automated slaughterhouse in Al Wakra Central Market with the aim of meeting the needs of the public, the company has said in a statement.
Development of the Um Salal public slaughterhouse will soon be completed, and it will officially open before the holy month of Ramadan — with a production capacity of 700 heads per day, according to Hassad.

Another public slaughterhouse, located in Al Sheehaniya, is currently being built and due to open before Eid al-Adha.
The slaughterhouse, once completed, will operate with a production capacity of 600 heads a day.
Mohamed al-Sadah, Hassad CEO, said: “In order to meet the needs of the public, especially during peak times such as the holy month of Ramadan and Eid al-Adha, we are developing the Um Salal public slaughterhouse to increase its production capacity to 700 heads per day. Moreover, an integrated public slaughterhouse is currently being built in Al Sheehaniya for sheep, camels and cows."

Al-Sadah explained that Hassad is currently conducting a study to re-evaluate public slaughterhouses in the Al Khor and Al Shamal areas, as well as other parts of the country, to serve the needs of the public.
The automated slaughterhouse in Al Wakra Central Market — which covers an area of 14,000sq m — currently functions with an average of 2,400 heads day.
Its production capacity can reach up to 9,000 heads a day for livestock.
It also includes one additional line for cows and camels in order to accommodate the high demand during peak seasons when the numbers exceed 6,000 heads a day, the statement adds.
