In order to prevent accidents caused by reckless driving in the Sealine area, the authorities concerned are to set up this year an exclusive circuit for safe drifting.

The initiative comes as part of the efforts to ensure a secure place for sports utility vehicle enthusiasts to show off their skills in a safe environment.

“A circuit will be opened at Sealine for the young people to enjoy their hobby without causing harm to themselves and others,” Major General Mohamed Saad al-Kharji, director general of the General Directorate of Traffic and deputy chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC), recently told local Arabic newspaper Arrayah.

The top official was of the view that the Sealine area should be a safe place for the youth who want to enjoy desert driving. The area is a favourite haunt of those who like to perform drifting in SUVs on the sand dunes.

“All the requirements of security and safety, including traffic patrols and Lekhwiya cars as well as ambulances and civil defence vehicles are available here. But, there is a need to set up a safe place,” he explained while adding that youth are satisfied with the new proposal.

Since the start of this year's camping season, Sealine has recorded more than 400 violations, with as many vehicles seized. According to the data, released by the General Directorate of Traffic, the serious violations include reckless driving.

Major General al-Kharji added that appropriate action will be initiated against violators and these vehicles will be released after corrective measures are taken.
