US President Donald Trump said Friday that he authorized a recent precision strike against the commander of its Quds Force of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps Qasem Soleimani to stop a war, not to start one.
Trump said in remarks on Friday at his Mar-a-Lago estate that Soleimani was "plotting imminent and sinister attacks on Americans".
"We took action last night to stop a war. We did not take action to start a war," Trump said.
The US President also blamed Soleimani for the recent attacks on the US targets in Iraq and the US Embassy in Baghdad, saying that Iran's "use of proxy fighters to destabilize neighbors, must end, and it must end now".
