The Ministry of Interior announced Monday that the Drug Enforcement Department has succeeded in thwarting an attempt to smuggle huge amounts of drugs into Qatar.
The ministry said in a statement that it had arrested a five-member gang of Asians trying to smuggle 100kg of hashish for the purpose of trafficking.
The ministry explained that the operation was carried out following a tip-off. A research team was formed to investigate the matter.
The investigation and observation work resulted in identifying a number of suspects and then reaching the warehouse where the drugs were hidden in goods containers carrying a shipment of marble.
The suspects concealed the drugs inside the cavities of the marble.
After taking the necessary legal procedures and issuing an order from the Public Prosecution to arrest members of the gang and search the warehouse, the police succeeded in raiding the warehouse after the arrival of gang members.
The seized drugs were packed in 192 cylindrical packages.
During the investigation, the accused persons confessed to smuggling and storing the narcotic substances for the purpose of trafficking.
They also guided police to the rest of the gang members who were later arrested.
All the accused and the detainees were referred to the competent authorities to complete the legal procedures, the ministry added.
