The Doha Forum, which concluded on Sunday, featured a panel of experts that discussed the issue ‘The Adaptation Challenge: New Approaches to Climate Change Resilience’.
Moderated by Terry Martin, senior anchor at DW News, the panel was composed of HE Fahad bin Mohamed al-Attiyah, ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the state of Qatar to the Russian Federation; Professor Li Xiaoyun , honourary dean, China Institute for South-South Cooperation in Agriculture, China Agricultural University;
Dr Agnes Kalibata, president, Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa; and Joe Cerrell, managing director for Global Policy and Advocacy, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Summing up al-Attiyah’s take on the topic at hand, Martin said the issue is not about technology and expertise but the issue of the economic model of the willingness of governments and societies to work together to address climate adaptation challenge.
Al-Attiyah said, “I am a believer of going down to the cultural DNA and trying to address this problem at the cultural level.”
The panel also discussed the technologies and approaches that are being developed to protect places and people, especially those most vulnerable, from the social and economic impacts.
They also explored questions, such as how can the public and private sectors better collaborate and implement innovative solutions to address current climate challenges?
What innovations in technology and agricultural development show promise for both private sector investment and public sector application? And what approaches to the adaptability challenge are being embraced by different nations and multilateral institutions, with what attendant results?
