Women should be given proper and easy access to credit and other necessary tools to maintain their financial independence and be successful entrepreneurs, Ivanka Trump, senior adviser to the US president, said.
Ivanka was speaking at a plenary session at Doha Forum 2019 yesterday when she described and lauded women’s empowerment in Qatar as amazing, giving women privileges and support unmatched in many parts of the world.
“Here in Qatar, we see a great example of entrepreneurship,” she said, explaining that women have adequate access to their own property, besides having and easy and equal access to credit, which is not the case in many countries. They can also manage their own businesses and have a good opportunity for success and growth, she noted. To Page 21
Ivanka said her initiative for empowering women globally involves vocational training related to the targeted location that equips them with the skills necessary to succeed in jobs, changing the local laws and regulations that prohibit women from travelling freely, and giving them the right and access to manage their own property without the need for the consent of a male relative.
In the meantime, she stressed the correlation between political instability and the state of insecurity with regard to discrimination against women. Women’s security should be integrated within the national security strategy, she said, noting that in 104 countries around the world, around 2.7bn women are not able to work in the same industries as men. There is a direct link between instability and insecurity and the difficulty faced by women in having access to the means that help them prosper.
Ivanka stressed that women should be adequately represented by lawmakers as they constitute a considerable part of the society and any society cannot flourish or maintain stability without giving them the necessary care to promote their rights and empowerment.
She pointed out that while the government should provide the needed legislative and organisational support, the private sector should play a key role in promoting entrepreneurship among women especially at small- and medium-sized enterprises. Besides, more needs to be done to overcome the legal and cultural barriers involved that impede the full realisation of women’s potentials in some societies.
She also talked about her trip to Morocco and the achievements in this regard, which were made possible through co-operation with the competent authorities. Similarly, she talked about her experience with the same issues in Latin America, in particular her trips to Columbia, Paraguay and Argentina.
Ivanka further stressed that peace and security matter more for women as supportive communities could help make women successful in various businesses.
