The Second Flowers Festival at Souq Waqif is highlighting various innovations and developments taking place in Qatar’s horticulture sector.
Organised by the Souq Waqif management and Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), the festival has drawn a considerable number of visitors since its launch on December 1.
The festival features various types of flowers, fruits, plants, seeds and fertilisers along with techniques and equipment for gardening, household farming and landscaping.
The event is being held as part of Qatar’s efforts to support tourism in the country and encourage those interested to buy and plant flowers and plants in their homes and gardens. It also provides producers with an ideal venue to market their products.
Farmers said the festival has evoked a good response and received a large number of visitors and buyers. “Our stall sees at least 1,000 potential customers a day. Most of them are keen to make a purchase and have queries about the products here,” said Shah Alam, representing Arab Qatari Agricultural Production Company.
Twenty-one farms and nurseries are participating in this year’s edition of the festival, which, according to the exhibitors, has so far witnessed a bigger turnout than the previous edition.
Apart from flowers that range from the rose to the ixora, the festival has more than 50 types of flowers on display. Also, various kinds of fruits, including orange, as well as lemon and seeds can be found there in addition to the bonsai plant.
Alam said roses of various types are among the crowd favourites at the festival. The varieties on offer left visitors highly impressed.
“The festival is rich in terms of the varieties of flowers available,” said Sameer Aboobacker, a visitor.
Rajesh V Nair, another visitor, praised the festival saying it offers an opportunity to understand the trends in farming and the technology used in gardening along with the relevant innovations.
The festival, taking place in the West Square of Souq Waqif, concludes tomorrow.
