Gulf Times and Arrayah newspapers, in association with Northwestern University, are hosting a four-day Masterclass on how ordinary people can engage in news coverage of sports in Qatar. Running from tomorrow until December 5, the programme is open to all sports enthusiasts in Qatar.
Gulf Times Editor-in-Chief Faisal Abdulhameed al-Mudahka and Arrayah Editor-in-Chief Abdullah bin Ghanim al-Ali al-Mohannadi announced the registration for the Masterclass as part of the ‘Friends of Qatar’ initiative launched by Gulf Times and Arrayah, which aims to support sports media and keep pace with digital developments.
In line with the “overall renaissance” across all fields in Qatar, especially sports, they stressed the endeavour to form a media base of 100 professionals in digital sports journalism in the first phase.
The programme aims to provide “invaluable insider knowledge and guidance on how ordinary people can be successful sports content generators and engage in sports and activities organised in the country, and have their unique perspectives published”.
The Masterclass promises to be highly-interactive and will provide real insight into what editors need, how to gather and produce a story, the technical aspects of mobile journalism and the responsibility, ethics and laws associated with content generation.
All four sessions will be held in the evening, between 4.30pm and 9.30pm, and provide opportunities for the participants to connect with Qatar’s leading media house and learn from expert instructors at Northwestern University.
Participants of the Masterclass will receive a certificate and become active members of the community, contributing images, videos and content.
While no previous experience or knowledge is necessary, participants need to create accounts at least on two social media platforms.
Attendance to the Masterclass is free of cost but requires registration.
Among the instructors is Eddy Borges-Rey, an associate professor-in-residence at Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q).
His area of academic expertise is digital journalism and emerging media and his teaching includes courses on mobile journalism, data journalism and social media for journalists, among others.
Craig LaMay is a professor and faculty associate at Northwestern’s Institute for Policy Research and a leading world authority in sports journalism.
He was the editorial director of the Freedom Forum Media Studies Center and editor of Media Studies Journal, as well as a former newspaper reporter.
Marcela Pizarro joined NU-Q’s Journalism and Strategic Communication Programme in 2019 as assistant professor-in-residence.
Pizarro is an award-winning journalist who worked as a producer and reporter at Al Jazeera English, both on the ground in Latin America, Washington DC and Doha and for the media critique show, The Listening Post in London.
