Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS), together with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS), has announced the opening of online application for medical scholarships in the 2020-2021 academic year.
Under the Amiri Medical Scholarship Programme, 10 scholarships will be granted to Palestinian physicians from Gaza and the West Bank. After 4-5 years of residency training in Qatar, the graduates will receive the Arab Board of Health Specialisations (ABHS) certification from HMC.
The available medical specialisations are divided as follows: West Bank – internal medicine (major: infectious diseases), internal medicine (major: nephrology), internal medicine (major: MICU), internal medicine (major: rheumatology) and cardiothoracic surgery; and Gaza - orthopaedics (major: spinal surgery), anesthetics and intensive care (major: regional anesthesia), internal medicine (major: geriatrics), obstetrics and gynaecology (major: maternal medicine) and general surgery (major: hepatobiliary surgery).
The selected applicants are bound to return to work in Palestinian health facilities for at least double the duration of the scholarship.
The selection process meets the standard selection procedures adopted by HMC. Applicants can preferably be fresh graduates or having experience in the specialisation applied for.
Dr Haitham al-Hassan, member of the programme’s consultative committee in Palestine, visited Doha to hold preparatory meetings with the concerned physicians and departments of HMC. He also checked the in-progress medical trainees.
As director of the Al-Makassed Hospital in Al-Quds, Dr al-Hassan discussed the development of the hospital with the top management of QRCS, which has been operating the hospital for many years.
The following eligibility requirements must be met by each applicant: first, to be a national and resident of Palestine with a valid Palestinian ID; second, to work in a Palestinian health facility; third, to be in continuous clinical practice for no less than six months; fourth, to be graduate of a recognised school of medicine and holder of Bachelor of Medicine/Surgery; fifth, to submit a valid certificate of either IELTS (passing score: Academic 7.0) or TOEFL (passing score: PBT 550 – IBT 87); sixth, to complete a one-year internship in a recognised hospital in Palestine or abroad; seventh, to be physically fit; eighth, to have a police clearance certificate; ninth, to hold no medical specialisation certificate from any other country; 10th, to complete the internship no earlier than four years ago; and 11th, to submit evidence of passing any of the following clinical examinations: USMLE Step 2 CK (passing score: 209) or IFOM-CSE (passing score: 73).
