*New centre able to respond quickly to disasters in any part of the world
Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has inaugurated its new disaster management centre, which responds immediately to natural or man-made disasters in any part of the world.
Prior to the ceremony, QRCS top management held discussions with the guests about the host organisations' relief, development, and humanitarian diplomatic operations, as well as the support from Islamic Development Bank (IDB) to IFRCs humanitarian efforts worldwide.
During the opening, President of QRCS Dr Mohamed bin Ghanem al-Ali al-Maadheed addressed staff and volunteers: "I congratulate everyone who contributed to this work. Day after day, QRCS makes a giant stride in developing itself. Undoubtedly, this centre would enable us to respond more effectively to major emergencies, as well as to train our staff to be ready for such situations". According to him, the main goals of QRCS are to save lives, alleviate human suffering, and preserve the dignity of victims of disasters, whether natural or human-made.
Undersecretary-General for Partnerships at the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Dr Jemilah Mahmood said: "I can see 17 years of development and professionalism at QRCS. The new centre is of very high quality. I have visited many disaster management centres around the world, and I find this one as good as, or even better than, them".
She hoped that this centre would train not only QRCS staff, but also the staff of other national societies that were not privileged enough to have their own disaster management centres.
The participants in this event looked forward to stronger partnership between IFRC and QRCS. This, they hoped, would give a further boost to the existing collaborative relations among national societies, IFRC, and the United Nations. It was agreed to appoint a point of contact to coordinate communications between the three parties.
Head of Alternative Development Finance, Department of Strategy and Transformation at the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Mohamed al-Habib Ansari appreciated the invitation to be part of this event. "QRCS's disaster management centre is one of the best globally," he stated. "We are currently working on a huge project to control cholera in 29 Muslim countries".
