The Department of Arabic Language at Qatar University’s (QU) College of Arts and Sciences organised its 8th International Conference of Arabic Department: The Cultural Studies and the Strategies Interpretation – Epistemological and Interdisciplinary Approaches.
College of Arts and Sciences Dean Prof Ibrahim al-Kaabi, Arabic Department head Prof Rachid Bouziane, and a large number of faculty, administrators, students and media representatives participated in the event.
The Department of Arabic Language seeks through this conference to monitor the Arab cultural readings, to examine the effectiveness of the tools of interpretation and strategies in the dialogue that covers a wide area of knowledge, related to cultural criticism, semiotics analysis, and ideological criticism, postcolonial studies, theories of reading and interpretation, digital literature, Orientalism, image culture, oral and blogging, and translations.
The department also seeks to achieve the following objectives: monitor the various inter-cognitive readings in the field of human sciences, to consider the possibility of conceptualising an Arab school for the study of cultural and literary; adopting non-traditional mechanisms in approaching and interpreting the Arab literary, monetary and cultural code, criticising stereotypical cultural loads in the collective imagination in the light of contemporary cultural studies, and keeping pace with contemporary methodological changes in reading and analysing the cultural product in the humanities.
The presence of cultural studies in the last two decades threatens the dominance of literary criticism to shift its attention from the limits of the literary text to broad interfaces, bringing together social sciences, anthropology, philosophy, media, communication, psychology, and other sciences in one context, as facets of cognitive and cultural production. While the changes that have affected the social, intellectual and cultural structure of Arab identity are evident throughout the ages, they are embedded in the texts produced by the Arab culture and are still produced from here.
The organising committee received more than 100 papers when it was announced and selected only twenty-two papers as the duration of the conference is limited to only two days.
QU hopes that this conference will be the first in a periodical series aimed at serving the Arabic language and scientific research first, as well as to draw the attention of researchers. (QNA)
