The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA), in collaboration with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), has conducted a one-day workshop on ‘Handling Internet Identifiers Abuse and Misuse’, and three-day workshop on Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC). Both workshops, held at CRA’s headquarters, were attended by representatives from government entities, oil and gas sector, academia and private sector, financial sector, telecom service providers, and law enforcement agencies.
The workshops aim to build capacity and raise awareness among technical professionals about the DNS operation and security. The workshops focused on enhancing participants’ understanding of the Internet unique identifier system, and equipping them with appropriate knowledge, skills, tools, and technologies related to handling DNS abuses and domain name misuses.
The CRA also conducted recently an academic engagement session, in collaboration with ICANN, which was attended by the students and academics of College of the North Atlantic, Qatar (CNA-Q) at the college’s headquarters. The workshop aims to educate participants about the Internet and its history, the formation of ICANN, understanding domain names, and sharing some security-related technologies such as DNSSEC and the KSK Rollover. Students were also exposed to some recent trends when registering domain names.
“The workshop was conducted in light of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) that was signed between Qatar and ICANN in 2014. The CRA ensures maintaining contact with ICANN to stay up to date with the latest developments in the field of the Internet domain names and to arrange for workshops and training courses for professionals in Qatar to equip them with the necessary skills and expertise, which will contribute to the achievement of our main objectives in this field, ensure the delivery of a secure Internet service to the people of Qatar, and boost the adoption of the Qatari domain names,” said CRA Technical Affairs Department manager Abdulla Jassmi.
“We are very excited with our CRA partnership in Qatar to help raise awareness amongst the local technical community. This is the first set of workshops of their kind with the CRA, and we look forward to more engagements with the Internet community in Qatar,” said ICANN Senior Global Stakeholder Engagement manager for the Middle East Fahd Batayneh.
“It was a pleasure hosting a presentation by Mr Fahd Batayneh from the ICANN. His presentation on the Internet and DNS trends and latest technology to College of the North Atlantic – Qatar Students, faculty, and staff reaffirmed the curriculum we offer and the relevance to the IT industry in the State of Qatar. “It was an excellent opportunity to engage our campus community and enhance the awareness of these topics being promoted by the CRA,” said Leigh Willis, chair and interim associate dean — School of Business Management and Information Technology, CNA-Q.
