The local agriculture products sales yards received a substantial turnout of customers since the early hours of its launch on Thursday for the new season. Abdulrahman al-Sulaiti, the general supervisor of these yards at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, told local Arabic daily 'Arrayah' that the yards at Al Mazrouah, Al Wakrah, Al Khor and Al Thakhira, Al Sheehaniya and Al Shamal were opened with 21 different types of locally produced vegetables.

These include pepper, eggplant, cucumber, zucchini, watermelon and sweet melons, in addition to the various types of leafy vegetables, livestock products, poultry, fish, fruits and ornamental plants. He pointed out that the types of products on display will be increased gradually over the coming weeks until most common varieties are covered as harvest time of each type approaches. He expected that all types of vegetables will be available at the yards by the start of December and in good quantities.
Al-Sulaiti said that there are expansion works at Al Mazrouah yard to include the products of two new companies, which will take the total number of the local participating farms at the five yards to 137 farms for this season. He added that the yards give some good advantages to the participating farm owners as they do not have to pay any fees and there are no mediators between them and the consumers. This has considerably contributed towards reducing the retail prices by around 20% compared to other outlets and up to 40% less than that of the mandatory price list of the consumer protection department.
The official also expected that the prices of such products will gradually go down within the upcoming weeks as more quantities are set to be on display at the yards. Large quantities of tomatoes and other vegetables will be on display at the start of December, he added.
