The ConocoPhillips Global Water Sustainability Center (GWSC) was honoured with the ‘2019 National Energy Globe Award for Qatar’ in recognition of its “Sustainable Application of Osmotic Concentration to Reduce Wastewater Disposal Volumes from Gas Fields” project.
The award was presented to Dr Samer Adham, manager, GWSC; and Joel Minier Matar, senior engineer, GWSC; during the Austrian National Day celebration ceremony organised by the Embassy of Austria in Qatar.
The ceremony took place at the Intercontinental Doha and was attended by various diplomatic and government dignitaries including HE the Minister of Commerce and Industry Ali bin Ahmed al-Kuwari.
“We recognise our responsibility to create and further environmentally-friendly methods of meeting the energy requirements of the communities we work in, continuing to explore some of Qatar’s top research priorities along the way,” said Todd Creeger, president, ConocoPhillips Qatar.
“We are proud to share the Energy Globe Foundation’s objective of finding sustainable alternatives for producing energy and preserving the Earth’s natural resources.”
The process utilises forward osmosis to reduce the disposal volume of produced and processed water volumes generated during natural gas extraction and processing.
The project in 2014 included a collaborative research effort with Nanyang Technical University in Singapore, which was funded by Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) under its National Priority Research Programme. Following successful lab tests, a pilot study was initiated in 2017 with additional funding from QNRF and participation of long-standing partners Qatar University and Qatargas. Qatar Science & Technology Park, a member of Qatar Foundation, has actively supported both studies.
In addition to this Energy Globe Award, the project also won the “Green Research by a Professional Award” during Qatar Sustainability Week 2017.
Based in Austria, the Energy Globe Foundation honours projects that enable efficient and sustainable energy usage — either through innovative technologies or effective outreach efforts — in 182 countries through its National Energy Globe Awards.
“The Energy Globe Awards represent the pinnacle of sustainability efforts in the world, highlighting those organisations that recognise the need for modern sustainable energy solutions,” said Caroline Adenberger, Commercial Counsellor at the Embassy of Austria.
“We are fortunate to witness the efforts of energy leaders such as ConocoPhillips first-hand, and we are excited to continue to promote this responsibility throughout the world.”
Located at the Qatar Science & Technology Park, GWSC is a Center of Excellence for water-related technologies and water sustainability research.
