Qatar Airways commemorated the opening of its new ward at the King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC) in Amman, Jordan, with a special ceremony on Tuesday, held under the patronage of Prince Talal bin Mohamed, Special Adviser to King Abdullah II.
Following the inauguration of the ward, Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive HE Akbar al-Baker and other representatives of the airline attended the King Hussein Cancer Foundation’s (KHCF) 2019 Hope Gala Event.
Supported by Qatar Airways as a Diamond Sponsor and Official Airline Partner, the gala aimed to raise funds to support the vital work of KHCF.
The ward's opening was attended by HE al-Baker alongside the ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Qatar to Jordan, Sheikh Saud bin Nasser al-Thani, Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthäus and other dignitaries and senior representatives from Qatar Airways.

On the occasion of the inauguration, Prince Talal thanked Qatar Airways for its belief in the lifesaving mission of KHCF and KHCC, and for its dedicated and generous support, which has had a great positive impact on the Center and helped save the lives of KHCC patients.
HE al-Baker said, “Qatar Airways is honoured to support the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Center and its efforts to fight cancer.
“I applaud their work to provide patients with the treatment and care they need to beat the disease, as well as its efforts to prevent cancer from developing into its later stages through awareness-raising on a regional and international level.
“The opening of our new ward at the King Hussein Cancer Center demonstrates our commitment to the Jordanian people and the region.
“It is one small way Qatar Airways can give back to the local community and contribute to this important cause.”
During the delegation’s visit to KHCC, Qatar Airways’ Oryx Kids Club mascot, Orry, was present in the children’s play area to entertain children currently undergoing treatment at KHCC, while HE al-Baker gave out toys to the children.
The toys were donated by Box of Happiness, a charitable initiative that aims to bring joy to children around the world.
The Qatar Airways Ward will serve leukaemia in-patients through its 24 state-of-the-art rooms, and its naming commemorates the longstanding and fruitful partnership between the airline and KHCF/KHCC, a press statement notes.
In the past, Qatar Airways has supported the Foundation and Center through the donation of cutting edge lifesaving machinery and medical equipment.
Representatives from the airline have also visited KHCC on several occasions, including various characters from the Oryx Kids Club to distribute gifts to children undergoing treatment at the Center.
Qatar Airways has a longstanding relationship with KHCC, having donated gifts to children at the Center on several occasions.
The airline has supported a number of other CSR initiatives in Jordan, including the distribution of humanitarian aid packages to underprivileged families in co-operation with the Jordanian Hashemite Charity Organisation, Qatar Charity and the Qatar Red Crescent Society, the statement adds.
Jordan has become one of Qatar Airways’ most important markets since it launched its first flight to Amman.
Today, Amman is served by 17 flights per week operated by wide-body aircraft, including the Airbus A350.
More than 400 Jordanians are employed by the Qatar Airways Group in Doha and worldwide to support its continued growth.
A codeshare agreement between Qatar Airways and Royal Jordanian Airlines, signed in 2015, connects passengers of both airlines to a greater number of destinations around the world.
The partnership was recently expanded to allow passengers of Royal Jordanian Airlines to book travel to Qatar Airways’ destinations in East Asia.
