Chief Operating Officer of Munich Security Conference (MSC) Dr Benedikt Franke has underlined that the MSC Cyber Security Summit 2019 which begins in Doha Monday represents a unique opportunity to enhance the message of Munich Security Conference to the region.
In an interview to Qatari daily Al Sharq Sunday, Dr Franke praised the intensive partnership between Qatar and Munich Security Conference, and the efforts exerted by Qatar to promote dialogue among people.
Dr Franke noted that the world is in urgent need for more co-operation in cyberspace, and the region needs digital security and an agreement on cyberspace management, noting that an important forum on Internet governance will be held in Berlin late next month.
On the topics to be addressed during the summit, Dr Franke said that various events will be hosted during the summit.
Some deal with current conflicts in the region, ranging from Yemen to Syria, while others deal with broader concerns.
Meanwhile, the Cyber Security Roundtable, which will be hosted by Qatar's Ministry of Transport and Communications, will focus on the need to secure increased digitisation in the region and the agreement on rules and regulations for cyberspace management.
"We greatly appreciate Qatar's efforts to promote dialogue by bringing people together in an effective way, which is why the Munich Security Conference was held. The motto "Build Peace through Dialogue" has guided our activities for nearly six decades. It is at the heart of all our efforts in this context," Dr Franke said.
Dr Franke said that the MSC is proud for its great relations with many countries and governments around the world, stressing that the partnership and friendship with Qatar is particularly intense, not only because Qatar has shown great interest in their activities for a long time, but also because of its key role in many of the discussions.
He pointed out that the management of cyberspace remains a major challenge at the national and international levels.
To enhance co-operation in this area, the safety committee seeks to promote discussion on how to address the abundance of malicious elements and the lack of effective standards in cyberspace.
He added: "Pure technologies of cyber security are not what matters, but what is important is the structural impact of these new technologies, ie how do they affect the way we live and how do they change the global balance of power, governance, incentives and processes. All these changes will be fundamental, but sometimes these radical changes may prompt governments to work together and find greater co-operation".
On Qatar's active role in mediating conflict resolution and achieving peace and development in various countries and its compatibility with the objectives of Munich Security Conference, Dr Franke said: "We support all mediation efforts, as we remain convinced that open dialogue is the only way to resolve conflicts. Recent history shows how sustainable diplomacy has been successful in achieving this."
