Changes in the approach to crescent sighting will be the basis of the next public lecture by Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) College of Islamic Studies (CIS).
Delivered by Sheikh Salman bin Jabor al-Thani, president of the Qatar Astronomical Centre, Crescent from the Perspective of Astronomy, Shariah, and Modern Science looks at how modern science and technology have influenced the traditional practice of crescent sighting.
In doing so, the event will also consider changes in the perception of this sensitive subject from the standpoint of Sunnah and Shariah.
Dr Mohamed El Gammal, associate professor, Comparative Fiqh, CIS, said: “We are looking forward to hosting such an esteemed astronomer to discuss what is an emotive issue for so many Qataris and the wider region.
There can be no doubt that scientific and technological advances have changed how societies perceive the practice of crescent sighting.
“Our public lecture will not only cast light on the ‘how’ but also the ‘why.’ As we see it, there are few better qualified than Sheikh Salman bin Jabor al-Thani to offer a unique perspective on this particular topic.”
The ‘Crescent from the Perspective of Astronomy, Shariah, and Modern Science’ public lecture will take place from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on October 30 at the auditorium, Minaretein Building, Education City.
The event will be held in Arabic, with simultaneous translation provided.
