During a ceremony in Washington, DC, HE the Minister of Public Health Dr Hanan Mohamed al-Kuwari was officially inducted into the National Academy of Medicine.
Last year HE Dr al-Kuwari was among 10 new international members elected to the National Academy of Medicine.
With a current membership of over 2,000, the National Academy of Medicine elects no more than 70 national and 10 international members each year.
Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honours in the fields of health and medicine and recognises individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.
The National Academy of Medicine confirmed HE Dr al-Kuwari’s election to the prestigious body for her outstanding contributions to the field of health.
Speaking during the induction ceremony, President of the National Academy of Medicine Dr Victor Dzau called HE Dr al-Kuwari one of the most impressive healthcare executives in the world.
“At a very young age she assumed overall leadership of Hamad Medical Corporation, which effectively serves as the national health system in Qatar, and she led it on an impressive transformation journey.
Her appointment in 2016 as Qatar’s Minister of Public Health further expanded her scope as she continues to lead Qatar’s health system into becoming one of the most impressive in the region and beyond with Qatar recently being ranked 5th best health system on the Legatum Institute ranking in 2019,” said Dr Dzau.
Qatar is ranked in the top 25 in the world for healthcare access and quality, according to the World Health Authority, and is in the top quartile in the Universal Health Coverage Index according to the WHO and the World Bank.
Qatar’s health system was ranked 5th best in the world and first in the Middle East by the 2018 Legatum Prosperity Index, advancing from 13th in 2017 and 27th in 2008.
The induction ceremony was part of the Academy’s annual meeting, which also hosted various speakers about the intersection between open source data science and privacy, artificial intelligence and its role in shaping healthcare delivery, and the ethics of human genome editing.
The National Academy of Medicine is an independent organisation of eminent professionals from diverse fields including health, medicine, and the natural, social and behavioural sciences.
It serves alongside the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering as an adviser for the nation and the international community.
Through its domestic and global initiatives, the National Academy of Medicine works to address critical issues in health, medicine, and related policy.
