Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) secretary-general Ali bin Hassan al-Hammadi has undertaken a tour of Maker-Majlis: Islam in a Global World, an event that attracts wide local and international attendance, at Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU)’s College of Islamic Studies (CIS), Education City.
There is a section for QRCS at Maker-Majlis where volunteers communicate with visitors. Also, the shelter tents and field hospital are displayed as innovative equipment used in relief operations, QRCS has said in a statement.
Dr Mohamed Evren Tok, assistant dean for Innovation and Community Engagement at CIS, said: “We are holding an event called Maker Majlis: Islam in a Global World. The idea behind this event is to bring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to a Qatari majlis. So, the venue is designed like a large majlis area, with a lot of organisations representing humanitarian action in the Muslim world, social entrepreneurship and different organisations that revolve around youth empowerment, capacity-building and also entrepreneurship. “QRCS has been a very crucial and very supportive organisation by providing a refugee tent experience. The students and the public in the morning and afternoon are going to see the refugee camp experience and better connect what they are discussing in Maker-Majlis with the real-world experience.
“The opening of the event will be attended by HE the Minister of State Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kuwari. The event will end with the distribution of the SDG awards, which is happening for the first time in Qatar.
“We have sponsors, collaborators and participants. In total, we have 23 different organisations; some of them are international such as the United Nations (UN) Development Programme through their office in Beirut. They bring youth representatives from Tunisia, Morocco and Jordan.
“We also have the UN Volunteers Programme, whose regional manager will be with us. And we have local organisations such as Ibtikar, Silatech, Qatar Science & Technology Park, Qur’anic Botanic Garden and many others.”
The motivation is to bring the Qatari perspectives and global perspectives together, and to ensure that whatever the problems in the world are, they are global ones and require global solutions, he explains.
“We believe that Qatar has been doing a lot internationally, and the youth need to know more about different opportunities and the possible ways of solving the problems they face,” he concluded.
