The traffic and airport security units of the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 organising committee have finalised plans to facilitate access to Khalifa International Stadium, which will host the opening ceremony and is the main venue of the event.
Dedicated, special counters have been set up at Hamad International Airport for the arriving delegations as part of the preparations.
Fahd Bohendi, who is in charge of traffic at the security committee, said his unit is ready to secure the roads leading to the event's venues after completing a comprehensive plan to facilitate traffic movement, the official Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported Saturday.
He noted that there will be patrols on the roads leading to the Corniche round the clock on the day of the opening ceremony, adding that there are back-up plans in case of any emergencies.
The official pointed out that the unit's preparations for the championship started two years ago and work was divided in accordance with the time available.
As the event drew closer, the security work was intensified in terms of processing traffic personnel and security plans for the hotels that would host the participating delegations, he added.
Bohendi said the Corniche closure would not affect traffic due to the presence of alternative routes. He stressed the importance of the public/motorists' co-operation with police patrols.
Further, he called on the public to use alternative methods of transport such as the Doha Metro and buses.
Recently, the Ministry of Interior had said the organising committee had made the necessary preparations and equipped the staff to play a key role in ensuring the success of the event and creating a safe and secure atmosphere for all. The preparations included field tours of the event’s facilities in addition to drawing up road and transportation plans and the use of major roads and alternative ways to facilitate traffic for the participating teams, citizens and residents.
In particular, there are three key sites from the security point of view. These are Khalifa International Stadium - the main venue of the games, the Doha Corniche - which will host the marathon and walking races, and Qatar Sports Club - which has been dedicated to the training of players participating in the tournament.
One of the biggest highlights - and innovations - of the event will be the men’s and women’s marathons, which are scheduled to start at midnight.
The IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 will be held from September 27 until October 6.
