The daily bulletin of fish prices issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) is set to reflect positively on reducing the prices at the local market, a local Arabic daily reported Friday.
A good number of customers pointed out that the prices of fish have lately dropped. A source at the MoCI told the newspaper that the daily prices bulletin will continue to be issued on a regular basis and the hike that was observed in fish prices last week was only due to the laws of supply and demand, as the quantity of fish available in the local market was not adequate.
The source said that prices lately dropped due to the improving supply and expected that further drop in prices will be seen by mid next month. In addition, the ban on fishing kingfish is set to expire by October 15, which will in turn reflect positively on retail prices.
Consumers are also hopeful that prices would drop as the weather improves and accordingly the catch of fish increase.
For instance, the price of a kilo of Hamour fish was recently around QR58 compared to around QR100 a week ago and Sheri QR18 compared to around 33.
Besides, consumers also stressed that the entities concerned should offer local fishermen more support, such as subsidised fuel and easing the procedures to have more access to more government services, in order to enhance their production.
