The Tilted Interchange tunnel, which is part of the Khalifa Avenue project, will be opened to traffic on September 8. This was announced by the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) yesterday. 
The 2.7km long tunnel, according to a statement by Ashghal, will be opened for traffic coming from Al Rayyan towards Al Gharrafa in co-ordination with General Directorate of Traffic. 
Ashghal has so far opened part of the Tilted Interchange tunnel to traffic for road users coming from Al Gharrafa towards Al Rayyan.
Ashghal is currently working on improving Al Gharrafa Street and Huwar Street and upgrading it to a two-level road. The works include the construction of four signalised intersections above the tunnel. 
The new Tilted Interchange tunnel has four lanes in each direction and it can accommodate more than 16,000 vehicles per hour once it is fully opened by the third quarter of 2020. 
The tunnel will have four intersections serving all facilities such as Sidra Hospital, Qatar Foundation and Qatar National Library.
The new opening will remarkably reduce traffic congestion in the area, especially on the Tilted Intersection. The new tunnel will provide free traffic flow for road users coming from Al Duhail and Al Gharrafa heading towards Al Rayyan by providing direct connectivity between the areas as well as reducing travel time between the neighbouring areas.
