The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs urged Muslims to fast the days of Tasua, the 9th of Muharram, and Ashurah, the 10th of Muharram, 1441, in pursuance of the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

In a statement, the ministry reminds Muslims of fasting on Sunday, Sept. 9, and Monday, Sept. 10, 2019, saying the fasting of these days is advisable.

According to the Holy Companion Ibn 'Abbas (Radi-Allahu 'anhu), the Holy Prophet, blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, when migrated to Madinah, found that the Jews of Madinah used to fast on the 10th day of Muharram.

They said that it was the day on which the Holy Prophet Musa (Moses), 'alayhi salam, and his followers crossed the Red Sea miraculously and the Pharaoh was drowned in its waters.

On hearing this from the Jews, the Holy Prophet, blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, said: "We are more closely related to Musa, 'alayhi salam, than you," and directed the Muslims to fast on the day of Ashurah. If one fasts on this day, it is better to fast the 9th of Muharram also to oppose the Jews. (QNA)
