As part of the ongoing Back to School campaign, the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has issued tips for parents and teachers in order to help students stay mentally fit and safe from the problems of bullying.
Clinical psychologist Dr Abdelhamid Afana, from the Psychiatry Department, Tuesday urged parents to be more careful towards children.
“Parents need to spend more time with children. They should give an ear to their school-going children and ask them open questions in order to know and address the worries they face in schools,” he said.
While talking about addressing behavioural issues of school children, Dr Afana suggested that parents should be aware of the problems faced by their children.
“Teachers also need to be careful. Teaching is not only about lessons. It’s about holding proper communication with students and helping them solve certain problems. And all children are not the same as some of them need extra care,” he said.
The clinical psychologist asked teachers to take steps to find out the underlying problems if students are found to be showing least interest in studying and other activities. Teachers should encourage students and help them get rid of the problems.
Dr Afana pointed out that HMC receives cases of anxiety and depression in students from schools and Primary Health Centres and observed that proper care could prevent these issues.
The HMC physician stressed the importance of sleep and urged parents to ensure their children get proper sleep.
"Ask children to go to bed at the earliest and do not let them remain sleepless. Do not let them use mobile phones or other devices in bed as they will disrupt proper sleep, a lack of which will result in provocation and lack of concentration,” he added.
