The Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS), through its representative mission in Sudan, has launched an urgent humanitarian intervention to help those affected by the monsoon rains and floods in the African country.
The QRCS is carrying out the mission in co-operation with its Sudanese counterpart to bring relief to residential areas in 15 Sudanese states, with the second phase of intervention planned in the next few days.
In a statement Sunday, the QRCS said that it has allocated an amount from its Disaster Information Management Centre (DIMC), as an initial funding for humanitarian intervention, which aims to meet the needs of those affected by floods in four affected villages in Bahri locality in Khartoum State. They will be provided with materials necessary for living, such as cooking utensils, drinking water, blankets and tarpaulins.
The statement noted that QRCS cadres have already started distributing mosquito nets, tarpaulins, blankets, floor mats, water and utensils. The initiative will benefit 735 families with more than 3,600 people in several villages in the locality. Community education sessions will also be held to raise health awareness among affected families.
Besides, medical assistance is also planned, including the refilling of 140 first-aid kits, fuel for the operation of several ambulances for a month, 10 life-saving drug packages and logistics for the volunteer teams involved, the statement added.
Sudan's floods and monsoon rains have so far claimed 54 lives and affected 194,000 people. The states most affected by the disaster are Khartoum, White Nile, and Kassala, where many families are trapped in the water.
Based on a field assessment by a joint relief team from the QRCS and the Sudanese Red Crescent Society to Bahri locality, the most urgent need at the moment is to provide immediate shelter for families living outdoors, as well as providing food and relief items.
