The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has completed the first phase of the upgrading works of Al-Rufaa Intersection (known as Sana Intersection). The signal was opened for traffic after removal of the temporary roundabout last Friday.
In a statement Sunday, Mohamed Arqoub Al-Khaldi, head of Doha City Section, Road Projects Department, said the upgrading of the intersection and removal of the temporary roundabout will result in increasing the intersection’s vehicular capacity and reducing the congestion.

He stressed that the intersection has a strategic location that links some of the major vital roads in Doha such as Ras Abu Abboud Street, Ali bin Omar Al- Attiya Street as well Ahmed bin Mohamed bin Thani Street and B-Ring Roads.
The newly upgraded signalised intersection serves several commuters between the densely populated surrounding residential areas such as Umm Ghuwailina, Al Hitmi, Old Al-Ghanim and Al Doha Al Jadeeda. It will enhance traffic flow at these dense areas and ensure easy access to Hamad International Airport, National Museum of Qatar, health and educational facilities, commercial centres and hotels.
As part of the stage one upgrading works, lanes were expanded from two to five lanes for vehicles coming from Ras Abu Abboud Bridge. These lanes include one to turn right towards Ali bin Omar Al Attiya Street, two lanes to continue straight towards Ahmed bin Mohamed bin Thani Street and two lanes to turn left towards B-Ring Road with the possibility of U-turn.
For traffic coming from B-Ring Road, the works provide with two lanes to continue straight towards Ali bin Omar Al Attiya Street or turn left towards Ahmed bin Mohamed bin Thani Street Road and one lane to turn right towards Ras Abu Abboud. As part of the works, lanes were expanded from two to five to include one lane to turn right towards B-Ring Road, two lanes to continue straight towards Ras Abu Abboud Street and two lanes to turn left towards Ali bin Omar Al Attiya Street with the possibility of U-turn for traffic coming from Ahmed bin Mohamed bin Thani Street.

The second and final stage of upgrading works of Al Rufaa Street is scheduled to be carried at the end of this year and will further expand the vehicular capacity of the intersection. The works at this stage will provide a total of eight lanes for traffic coming from Ras Abu Abboud Street and Ahmed bin Mohamed bin Thani Street including four lanes to continue straight, three lanes to turn left and one lane to turn right. The upgrading works also include expansion of eastbound lanes of Ras Abu Abboud Street from two to four in addition to a service road to facilitate access to shops and businesses alongside the road.
