Bryce Harper hit a walk-off grand slam into the second deck in right field off Derek Holland in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally the host Philadelphia Phillies past the Chicago Cubs 7-5 on Thursday.
Harper, whose moonshot exited at 113mph and an extremely steep 40-degree launch angle, also had two homers in Wednesday’s 11-1 victory.
“Besides winning the division and getting to the playoffs, that was one of the coolest moments I’ve ever had in my life,” an exhilarated Harper said afterwards.
The Phillies entered the ninth trailing 5-1 before exploding for six runs to secure the three-game series sweep. After trotting to first while watching his blast, Harper sprinted the rest of the way in anticipation of the celebration.
“I was just so excited to get back with the boys at home plate,” Harper said. “Everybody was going nuts. I was trying to get there as quick as possible to celebrate.”
Roman Quinn and Corey Dickerson had two hits each for the Phillies. Phillies starter Drew Smyly struggled through five innings, allowing seven hits and five runs. Ranger Suarez (4-1) earned the win in relief. Anthony Rizzo homered, singled and knocked in two runs for the Cubs. Kyle Schwarber also homered while Nicholas Castellanos added two hits and also walked twice. Cubs starter Yu Darvish was stellar through seven innings in giving up four hits and no runs. Darvish struck out 10 and walked none. Pedro Strop (2-5) took the loss in relief.
The Cubs struck first when Rizzo launched a mammoth solo homer to right field in the third inning for a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Philadelphia’s Adam Haseley was stranded at second base when Harper struck out swinging to end the threat.
Chicago capitalised in the fourth when David Bote hit an RBI double and Albert Almora Jr. added an RBI single for a 3-0 advantage. Rizzo then ripped a run-scoring single to right for a 4-0 lead. Schwarber snapped an 0-for-10 skid with a solo homer to centre in the fifth for a 5-0 advantage. It was Schwarber’s 100th career home run.
The Phillies managed only four hits through the first six innings - doubles by J.T. Realmuto and Dickerson and singles by Haseley and Logan Morrison.
Darvish’s 10th strikeout of the game against Haseley ended the seventh.
In the eighth, the Phillies had runners on second and third with two outs, and Dickerson singled home Quinn to get within 5-1.
But on the play, Rhys Hoskins was thrown out at home by right fielder Castellanos trying to score from second.
Brad Miller hit an RBI single with one out in the ninth to close within 5-2. Quinn followed with an RBI single, and Hoskins was hit by a pitch before Harper’s walk-off slam.

Alonso ties record, Mets hold off Braves in slugfest
New New York first baseman Pete Alonso matched the National League rookie record with his 39th home run, and pitcher Marcus Stroman earned his first victory since joining the team as the visiting Mets outslugged the Atlanta Braves 10-8 on Thursday.
Alonso connected for a 451-foot three-run homer in the first inning against Atlanta starter Julio Teheran to match the record set in 2017 by Cody Bellinger of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Aaron Judge holds the major league rookie record with 52 homers in 2017.
It was a terrific night for Alonso, who went 5-for-5, his first career five-hit game, and drove in a career-high six runs.
The Braves rallied to score four runs via three home runs in the ninth inning and forced the Mets to insert closer Edwin Diaz. He walked Brian McCann but fanned Ender Inciarte to end the game and earn his 25th save.
The Mets salvaged one win out of the three-game series and snapped their three-game losing streak.
Stroman (7-11) got his first win with the Mets after being denied in two previous starts.
He allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits and four walks with five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Stroman improved to 3-0 in his career against the Braves.
Teheran (7-8) allowed six runs in 1 1/3 innings, the shortest start of his career. He gave up eight hits and three walks and had two strikeouts.
New York’s Amed Rosario went 5-for-6 with a double, a triple and four runs. It was the first five-hit game of Rosario’s career, and he became the first Met with back-to-back games of at least four hits since Jose Reyes in June 2011.
The Mets amassed a season-high 23 hits, tied for third most in franchise history. Wilson Ramos (four hits), Juan Lagares (three) and Michael Conforto (two) also posted multi-hit games.
Atlanta hit six home runs in the loss, two each by Freddie Freeman, who has 31 this year, and Josh Donaldson, who has 28. The Braves got a solo shot from Matt Joyce, his fourth, and a two-run homer from Ronald Acuna Jr, his 35th.
Todd Frazier hit his 16th homer for the Mets.
