Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has launched a series of health education sessions for school students. Funded by Roche Holding, a Swiss multinational health care company, these sessions are estimated to benefit up to 750 boys and girls.
It is a joint undertaking by several QRCS programmes, including Patient Support Fund; QRCS School Programme; and Training, Research, and Development Center. Under the plan, 25 informative sessions will be held on certain health topics of interest for the students and their families, with an average of 30 participants each.
Taught by specialist health educators and nutritionists, the sessions focus on many common diseases, their causes, symptoms, treatment, and prevention through healthy diet and drinking water. Examples of such diseases are kidney diseases, rheumatism, rheumatoid arthritis, and renal failure.
Najat Abdul-Rahman Al-Haidous, head, social care in QRCS, said that a top priority of QRCS is to back the government’s efforts of developing the health care system, as well as to raise awareness among society members about the health risks that may affect their lives.
“According to research, there is a high correlation between the level of community health culture on the one hand, and economic development and quality of life on the other. That is why we work in harmony with the health authorities, basically the Ministry of Public Health and Hamad Medical Corporation”.
QRCS’s Patient Support Fund is a major social welfare programme that seeks to cover the costs of treatment for poor patients, provide socio-psychological support, and hold awareness lectures and public events.
