Qatar witnessed an increase in its labour force in the first three months of 2019 as compared to the last quarter of 2018, statistics show.
The number of participants in the labour force went up from 2,093,360 workers in Q4 2018 to 2,150,694 workers in Q1 2019, a rise of 2.73%. This included 85.3% males and 14.7% females.
These figures were among the key findings of the Labour Force Sample Survey for Q1 2019, conducted by the Planning and Statistics Authority.
The survey is carried by the Planning and Statistics Authority after taking into consideration the recommendations of the International Labour Organisation (ILO). It is aimed at monitoring trends and changes in the labour market.
The data also indicated that the economic participation of the population aged 15 years and above stood at 88.2%, accounting for 96% for males and 60.3% for females. In comparison, the labour force participation rate among individuals aged 15 years and above was 88% in Q4 2018, accounting for 96% for males and 58.6% for females.
According to the survey, the 25-34 years age group represented the highest rate of economic participation with 94.5%, while the economic dependency rate reached 29.4% for the quarter. The corresponding figures for Q4 2018 were 94.4% and 30%, respectively.
Also, the results showed that the economic participation rate of Qataris reached 51.7% of the total Qatari population aged 15 years and above. This was the same in Q4 2018.
The data, meanwhile revealed a rise in the number of salaried workers in the said period.
The number of salaried workers in the Qatari market increased from 2,088,149 workers in Q4 2018 to 2,144,324 workers in Q1 2019, a rise of around 2.69% accounting for 85.3% males and 14.7% females.
The survey also showed that the number of job seekers in Qatar, according to the ILO definition, reached 2,189 people in Q1 2019, accounting for 44.1% were males and 55.9% females. The unemployment rate settled at 0.1% from Q1 2018 to Q1 2019.
