Indoor sport and recreational facilities, as well as shopping malls across Qatar continue to attract many residents this summer, offering various fitness options that suit their preference.
Apart from workouts at fitness gyms, it is learnt that bowling, badminton, table tennis, and billiards are among the popular physical activities for both players and enthusiasts especially during the weekends.
“The weather should not hinder us from exercising or if we want to stay fit and healthy,” said an Egyptian expatriate who plays table tennis regularly with his compatriot at the Qatar Bowling Centre (QBC) and in other locations in the country.

The increasing popularity of badminton has also made several venues crowded and often fully-booked in the evening and the weekends

QBC, a recreational centre located in Central Doha in Al Mannai Roundabout, features a 32-lane state-of-the-art bowling arena, billiards and table tennis sections, as well as other games for both children and adults.
He hopes that similar facilities will either open or expand operations in the near future, providing more spaces to the growing number of people, especially families, who are looking for alternative locations.

Bowling is one of the favourite recreational activities this summer

He added that many residents shift from outdoor to indoor activities during this period – a reason for him to book early and get a slot at the venue in the evening.
Another popular destination for table tennis enthusiasts is the Qatar Table Tennis Training Centre. Different nationalities play here every Friday.
The increasing popularity of badminton has also made several venues crowded and often fully-booked in the evening and the weekends.
“We play in these venues even during the weekdays not only to practice and prepare for summer tournaments but also to stay in shape,” said a Filipino expatriate, who urged his compatriots to try the sport.
Among the sought-after badminton locations include Al Arabi Sports Club and schools such as the Cambridge School Doha, which provide safe, secured and temperature-controlled environment.
“Badminton is one of the best and fastest ways to burn calories and reduce weight whether it’s summer or winter in Doha,” the player said.
Many residents also find shopping malls as suitable indoor locations to walk, along with their families, friends or colleagues this season.
An employee of a sports shop in one of the major malls told Gulf Times that demand for fitness trackers and pedometers (various brands) substantially increased since the start of the summer and in the past few weeks.
“We are out of stock right now. A lot of people, including those who window shop, nowadays want to monitor their number of steps per day, the number of calories they burned for a specific workout or activity,” he said.
He expects that more residents and visitors will visit the malls in the future, either during summer or winter, once the Doha Metro is fully operational.
The Metro’s Red, Green, and Gold Lines link several business establishments and facilities, including malls such as City Center Doha, Villaggio Mall, Galeries Lafayette at Katara – the Cultural Village, and Mall of Qatar.
