Traffic awareness programmes and checks continued as the General Directorate of Traffic's 'Accident-free Summer' campaign entered its second week.
Officials are conducting a slew of activities as part of the month-long initiative, a press statement by the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said.
Lieutenant-Colonel Jaber Mohamed Odeiba, Assistant director of the Traffic Awareness Department at the directorate, said the campaign directly addresses motorists. During the first week of the campaign, 11 awareness checkpoints were set up in different areas of Doha, focusing on raising awareness about various kinds of violations such as the use of mobile phones while driving, illegal overtaking, parking in places reserved for persons with special needs and stopping in the yellow box.
Also, an exhibition was organised as part of the campaign in co-operation with the General Directorate of Drug Enforcement. It saw the participation of a number of MoI departments at Mall of Qatar on the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse.
The assistant director said a cultural symposium will be organised as part of the 'Accident-free Summer' campaign in the coming week. The event will discuss the rights and duties of pedestrians on roads.
The symposium will be held with the participation of the heads of various communities in Qatar and awareness programmes will be conducted in Al Khor and the Industrial Area.
The programmes will make delivery boys who use motorbikes as well as labourers aware of traffic rules, rights and violations during driving, walking and crossing. Besides, lectures and exhibitions will be organised in co-operation with clubs and youth centres in a bid to educate the youth on the dangers of driving without a licence and other traffic violations. In addition to these, awareness campaigns will be carried out through various media platforms, including social media.
This year, the ‘Accident-free Summer’ campaign focuses on raising awareness among motorists through the deployment of traffic patrols, and is being implemented in co-operation with the Public Relations Department of the MoI. The campaign, aimed at curbing traffic violations and road accidents, will continue until August 1.
The main goal of the campaign is to educate the public on the rules of traffic safety and safe driving, with a focus on motorists, especially youths, in the city of Doha and external areas.
The campaign will involve the distribution of awareness publications, such as brochures and leaflets, as well as offering guidance to motorists on different roads and commercial streets and in markets. This will be done within Doha and places beyond it, including Dukhan.
