Doctors in Germany are not obliged to try to
save someone's life against their will following a suicide attempt, a
court has ruled.
The Federal Court of Justice in Leipzig on Wednesday upheld decisions
from regional courts in Berlin and Hamburg in which the will of the
patient was found to be a deciding factor.
The two doctors involved had both cared for sick patients who had
taken deadly medications, but decided not to take any measures to
save them. They were accused of homicide.
However, the court ruled that in both cases, it was clear that the
patients had wanted to end their lives.
