*Follow-up Committee on the Implementation of Doha Declaration on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice
The 9th Meeting of the Follow-up Committee on the Implementation of the Doha Declaration of the 13th Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (Doha 2015) discussed in Doha Thursday the projects on the themes of the Universal Declaration of Education for Justice, the integrity of the judiciary, the rehabilitation of prisoners and the prevention of crime among young people through sport.
Adviser to HE the Minister of Interior, Major General Dr Abdullah Yousif al-Mal, who is also Chairman of the Follow-up Committee for the implementation of the World Program for the Doha Declaration said this coordination meeting is held every three months between the committee charged with following up the implementation of the Doha Declaration (on behalf of the State of Qatar), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and it is concerned with the achievements made in implementing the Declaration with its four axes.
Al-Mal pointed out in a statement after the meeting that the committee reviewed what has been achieved in the five continents around the world, specifically for the least developed countries, in addition to the results of the workshops, in view of the material resources provided for these four axes, as well as discussing what will be submitted to the 14th United Nations Conference on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, to be held in Kyoto, Japan, in April next year.
He stressed that the implementation of the Doha Declaration projects is moving rapidly, in addition to adding several countries to the list of beneficiaries of the programme such as the State of Palestine, Kyrgyzstan and some South American countries, and currently Tunisia, Morocco and some of the least developed countries in the African continent.
The Director, Division for Treaty Affairs at UNODC John Brandolino, and head of the United Nations delegation participating in the meetings of the Committee, said that the meeting addressed the achievements of the World Programme for the Implementation of the Doha Declaration, adopted in 2015 in more than 65 countries around the world, in the form of direct technical assistance in various areas of the programme in sport, education, prisoner rehabilitation and judicial integrity.
Brandolino noted Qatar's generous support for the programme, stressing that Qatari partners are outstanding, and these high-level meetings with Qatar reflect their commitment and the very good work they are performing with the agency.
Third Secretary, Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations and international organizations in Vienna Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Nasser al-Thani, referred to the progress made in programmes for prisoner rehabilitation and youth education in Bolivia, Colombia, Brazil, El Salvador and others.
He also referred to the feedback from the judges towards the programmes, which represent a major step towards the integrity of the judicial process, and to educate and establish ties between members of the judiciary in different countries to enhance communication and exchange of experiences.
