The Ministry of Transportation and Communication (MoTC) and the Korean Trade Investment Agency (Kotra) have collaborated to host the ‘ITS Forum’ held recently at the Hilton Hotel in Doha.
The forum offered the opportunity for 13 South Korean companies specialising in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to showcase their technologies and expertise to their Qatari Counterparts, and discuss opportunities for partnerships and collaborations during FIFA World Cup in 2022 and beyond.
The forum agenda included a G2G meeting between MoTC assistant undersecretary of Digital Society Development Reem al-Mansoori, South Korean ambassador Chang-mo Kim, and senior leadership from South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation (Molit), ITS Korea, and Korea Expressway Corporation.
The parties discussed potential collaboration and partnerships with Tasmu, the MoTC’s Smart Qatar programme, related specifically to the transport and logistics sector during 2022 FIFA World Cup and beyond as the parties drew parallels between the World Cup and South Korea’s experience during the PyeongChang Winter Olympics 2018.
During the meetings, South Korean delegation were also briefed on Tasmu’s projects and the different ways Tasmu is driving the intersection of innovation and advanced technology to transform Qatar into a smart country that serves the state’s citizens and economy.
The delegation was also offered the opportunity to participate in Tasmu’s Digital Cluster, a programme responsible for collaboration with technology partners, and share their experiences and recommendations with local Qatari companies.
Al-Mansoori said: “We are honoured to host the ITS delegation here in Qatar. The engaging presentations and series of B2B and G2G meetings brought to light many aspects of our shared vision for innovation and technological advancement.
“Particularly as we look ahead to World Cup 2022, there is abundant potential and opportunity for collaboration between Tasmu and our South Korean counterparts to deliver best practices and smart-solutions that facilitate convenience and seamlessness for Qatar’s citizens, residents, and visitors.”
Kim, for his part, said: “The ITS Forum is meaningful as it is in line with the previous discussions and agreements at the highest level. I believe our two countries can share policies and experiences in the area of intellectual transportation systems, and that companies of both countries could have more business opportunities in the area.”
Sung Seup Kang, director of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation, said: “In Qatar, efforts are being made to establish various transport systems and related infrastructure for the successful hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The ITS Roadshow is a venue to share visions, plans, and experiences of both governments and introduce technologies and experiences of businesses of both countries to discuss cooperation.”
The ITS Forum is comprised of a series of presentations by Tasmu, Public Works Authority (Ashghal), Molit, Hyundai Motors, ITS Korea, and Korea Telecom, among others.
Each presentation offered key information into the latest technologies and developments related to intelligent transportation systems both in Qatar and South Korea, outlining the cutting-edge products and services in the transportation and logistics sectors.
Al-Mansoori extended an invitation to ‘Qitcom 2019’, welcoming Kim and South Korean companies to attend and participate in the upcoming conference taking place between October 29 and November 21 under the patronage of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani.
The fifth edition of Qitcom is an international conference and exhibition that will showcase innovative and disruptive technologies, while creating a knowledge-sharing platform for technology providers, policy- makers, industry experts, and global thought-leaders.
