A delegation is visiting Qatar to review the country’s readiness to host the 16th International Junior Science Olympiad from December 3-12.
Qatar is the first Arab host country of the Olympiad, whose 2019 edition is being organised by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in co-operation with Qatar University (QU) and Qatar Foundation.
The visit by the International Junior Science Olympiad organisation includes a meeting between the delegation and Fawzia Abdulaziz al-Khater, Assistant Undersecretary for Educational Affairs at the ministry.
The delegation will also meet with the heads of the Olympiad scientific and organisation committees to discuss preparations for hosting the event.
It is expected that the delegation will visit the residence of the students and team leaders of the participating countries, the ministry has said in a statement.
The theoretical and practical test venues will be visited as well as other rooms and facilities prepared for the discussion of test questions, for correction and deliberation of the results.
Besides, the Olympiad delegation members will pay visits to other suggested venues for extracurricular activities.
Qatar presented “a solid and integrated bid” to host the tournament during the last edition, held in Botswana in December, and won the honour of hosting the 2019 Olympiad, the statement noted.
The Qatari participating team had won the bronze medal at that event.
The Ministry of Education and Higher Education started preparations for the tournament by launching an official website and forming the technical and organisation committees that would work in co-ordination with the ministries and authorities concerned in Qatar.
The competition aims to promote the spirit of excellence in the field of science, celebrate gifted students and motivate them to refine and develop their talents in the field of natural sciences.
As the host country, Qatar is entitled to participate with a team composed of 18 students in the Olympiad.
The students are currently being trained under the “highest standards” for the upcoming Olympiad in Doha in co-operation with QU and different universities in Education City.
